As winter approaches with its icy sidewalks and snow-covered driveways, the risk of slips and falls increases significantly. Falling during winter can lead to serious injuries, especially for older adults. Fortunately, there are several proactive measures you can take to stay safe and prevent winter falls.
Wear Proper Footwear
Choosing the right footwear is crucial. Choose shoes and boots with thick, non-slip rubber soles and good treads to provide better traction on ice and snow. Avoid wearing smooth-soled shoes, as they increase the risk of slipping. Wearing Yaktrax on the bottom of shoes provides extra grip and is a helpful and affordable option.
Take Small, Careful Steps, Use the “Penguin Walk”
When walking on icy or snowy surfaces, slow down and take smaller steps to maintain balance. Keep your center of gravity over your front leg, and walk flat-footed when possible. This technique, often called the “penguin walk,” helps improve stability.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care can help maintain proper alignment and balance in the body, reducing the risk of falls. Chiropractors can also provide stabilizing exercises to enhance stability. Additionally, chiropractic care can be beneficial in recovering from falls by restoring the body’s position and facilitating the healing process.
Exercise to Improve Balance and Strength
Engaging in regular physical activity helps improve muscle strength and balance, reducing your risk of falling. Simple exercises, like leg lifts and balance drills, can make a significant difference.
Keep Hands Free for Balance
Avoid carrying heavy loads or keeping your hands in your pockets while walking. Keeping your arms free and slightly extended can help you balance better. If you need to carry items, consider using a backpack to distribute the weight evenly.
Use Assistive Devices if Needed
For individuals who require extra support, canes or walking sticks with an ice grip attachment can be very helpful. Handrails on stairs should always be used, even if you feel confident without them. Wear Yaktrax for added grip on the bottom of your shoes.
Clear Pathways and Apply Ice Melt
Regularly clear your walkways, steps, and driveways of snow and ice. Use salt, sand, or kitty litter to add traction to slippery surfaces. If you can’t do it yourself, arrange for someone to assist you.
Stay Alert to Changing Conditions
Weather can change rapidly in winter, creating unexpected hazards. Be mindful of wet floors inside buildings where snow has been tracked in, as well as black ice outdoors, which can be difficult to see.
Plan Ahead
Give yourself extra time when going out in order to avoid rushing, which increases the likelihood of falling. If conditions are particularly treacherous, consider rescheduling non-essential outings.
By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of falls during the winter months. Remember, safety should always be your top priority when navigating icy conditions.
