Beyond the Barn: The Side of Trinity Equestrian Center You Didn’t See Coming

When people hear “Trinity,” they think horses, dirty boots, veterans, and miles of white fencing. Here’s the twist. The majority of what happens at Trinity every single year doesn’t involve a horse at all—it’s built on one-on-one time between a consistent adult and a young person, showing up, building trust, and working toward real-life growth together.

Back in 2009, what was then called Trinity Mentoring was launched, and started with one adult walking alongside one young person who needed someone steady. No big fanfare, just connection. Fast-forward to today, that simple one-on-one model has grown into several Youth Development Programs that have supported thousands of local kids over the years, and now works with hundreds of youth each month across Western Wisconsin. And at its core, it’s still the same. One adult. One young person. One intentional relationship. Connection.

These sessions aren’t tutoring, and they aren’t therapy. They are goal-driven and relationship-based. Youth work toward confidence, emotional regulation, communication, and independence through engaging, real-world activities that make growth feel natural. As one of the creators of the Youth Counseling Program, I’ll occasionally walk into a local library or community space and catch a glimpse of a Trinity session in progress—a Youth Counselor and a young person sitting across from each other, building trust in real time. It’s subtle, but it’s also life changing.

We believe connection is the key to learning, growing, and healing. When a young person feels seen and valued by a consistent adult, progress follows. In a world of apps, algorithms, and quick fixes, Trinity has doubled down on something slower and stronger: relationship. No horses needed. No spotlight shining. Just steady adults helping young people turn struggles into strengths.

Our Youth Development Programs operate through contracts with Comprehensive Community Services, Children’s Long-Term Support, and with counties directly, ensuring the youth who most need support can access it. It may not be the version of Trinity people expect, but it’s the heartbeat of what we do, because these kids are our future.
